  • ELEW
A modern day pop artist and musical revolutionary, piano iconoclast ELEW is making a substantial impression on the music world with a thunderous new style of playing: an inspired melding of ragtime, rock and pop that he calls Rockjazz.ELEW has toured the world, recorded, and performed continuously with Wynton Marsalis and the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra, Elvin Jones, Roy Hargrove, and Cassandra Wilson, among others. He won the 1999 Thelonious Monk International Piano Competition, his mesmerizing piano theatrics even then hinting at the new musical paradigm he would one day create. Now, in the jazz tradition of interpreting popular tunes of the day, much like Art Tatum and John Coltrane, ELEW has turned to rock, combining a guitarist’s approach to the piano with an explosively physical style of playing that would be at home in any arena. An imposing force even before he stands (not sits) behind the piano, ELEW is known for playing his instrument like an athlete plays a sport—plucking at the strings directly, testing the limits of his body, pushing through the pain and exhaustion….but never stopping. As he continues to gain notoriety with his blistering renditions of infectious rock and pop anthems by Coldplay, The Killers, Nirvana, and more, he has broken free of the rigidly defined boundaries of the traditional jazz world and ultimately given birth to something wholly original. His relentless innovation and disregard for the musical status quo has shocked and angered the jazz world even as it has attracted the rapt attention and following of mainstream political, artistic, and cultural leaders from across the globe—including Donna Karan, Sting and Eric Schmidt of Google, among others—as well as netting the musician a historic performance at the White House itself. Learn more at www.ELEWROCKJAZZ.com. ELEW’s debut album—ELEW Rockjazz Volume 1—is now available for digital purchase on iTunes and on CD Baby. He won the 1999 Thelonious Monk International Piano Competition, his mesmerizing piano theatrics even then hinting at the new musical paradigm he would one day create. Now, as he continues to gain notoriety with his blistering renditions of rock and pop hits by today’s top artists, he has broken free of the rigidly defined boundaries of the traditional jazz world and ultimately given birth to something wholly original. His relentless innovation and disregard for the musical status quo has attracted the rapt attention and following of political, artistic, and cultural leaders across the globe, including Michelle Obama (for whom he played at the White House), Donna Karan, Robert F. Kennedy III, and Judith Jamison. For Jamison, he has recently composed the original music for a brand new dance piece entitled “Among Us,” in honor of her 20th anniversary as Alvin Ailey Dance Theater Artistic Director. While on an eight week European tour during the summer of 2009, ELEW took some time in Milan to record his highly anticipated debut album of Rockjazz covers, entitled Rockjazz: Vol. 1—to be released in Fall/Winter 2009. In addition to a characteristically busy touring schedule, he is currently working on a slew of film and television scoring projects, including an animated series, several Hollywood features and an upcoming project with the Walt Disney Company. • Complexions Contemporary Ballet
It is artistic directors Dwight Rhoden & Desmond Richardson’s lifelong appreciation for the artistic & aesthetic appeal of the multicultural that forms the cornerstone of Complexion Contemporary Ballet’s singular approach to reinventing dance. Founded by the two former Alvin Ailey members in 1994, Complexions’ groundbreaking mix of methods, styles, cultures has created an entirely new and exciting vision of human movement over the past decade-and-a-half. The company’s foremost innovation is that dance should be about removing boundaries, not reinforcing them. Whether it be the limiting traditions of a single style, period, venue, or culture, Complexions transcends them all, creating an open, continually evolving form of dance that reflects the movement of our world—and all its constituent cultures—as an interrelated whole. It is Rhoden and Richardson’s unique career paths that have paved the way for them to re-define dance—as their multifaceted resumes will show, neither has ever been comfortable with his art being placed in a box. Instead, from E! to PBS to VH1, from Cirque de Soleil to the Joffrey Ballet, the two have allowed the transformative power of their art to flow freely throughout the entertainment world—their creative vision restricted by nothing but the limits of the human body itself. Together, Dwight Rhoden and Desmond Richardson have created in Complexions an institution that embodies its historical moment, a sanctuary where those passionate about dance can celebrate its past while simultaneously building its future. In the 15 years since its inception, the company has born witness to a world that is becoming more fluid, more changeable, and more culturally interconnected than ever before—in other words, a world that is becoming more and more like Complexions itself.
  • Craig T. Williams
Craig T. Williams is not your average historian. But then again, he’s not recounting your average history. What interests Williams is the buried parts of the human story—the defining people and events that throughout the years have been glossed over, forgotten and denied their rightful place in our historical narrative. These stories are transcendent and they are heroic. They are the stuff of myth and legend. They are the stories of a hidden global past. And Craig Williams aims to bring them all to light. His debut historical novel, The Olympian: An American Triumph, tells the story of John Baxter Taylor Jr., the first African-American Olympic Gold Medalist. Craig Williams was born into the entrepreneurial life. The influence of his father, a successful marketing sales executive and eventual business owner, shaped who he would become professionally from an early age. But what most fascinated Williams and would truly come to define his professional life were the figures he found in the books he read and the movies he watched—heroes. In modern myths like Star Wars and Lord of The Rings, Williams discovered his passion for literature and for the power of story. But even then, he wondered why more of these icons did not look the way he did. For all of the influence African-Americans had in the growth of development of this country, they barely factored in its myths. Attending Syracuse University and earning his degree in business management, Williams continued along the path of commerce and founded Pride Enterprises, Inc., which he soon cultivated into multi-million dollar construction enterprise, only one of several similar concerns. Combining formidable business acumen with a philanthropic spirit, Williams changed the life of injured Iraq War veteran Richard Bennett when he partnered with him in another construction firm, Fidelis Design and Construction, now a multi-million dollar firm with several government contracts to work on Veterans Affairs medical centers. However, Craig Williams’ time as a business student in college had another, unintended effect. As he began to attend more and more humanities classes outside of his major, there quickly awoke in him the zeal for history that would become his life’s true calling. He realized that history was itself a story, populated by its own characters, its own chapters and its own heroes. And like in all stories, there is always something left untold. In this case, he saw that too many of his trailblazing predecessors had been largely written out of the popular historical narrative, and he decided then and there that he would do his best to re-inscribe them on our collective memory. Calling on all of his experience as a businessman and a writer, Craig Williams has now founded his own arts and entertainment business: Vintage World. The stated aim of this multimedia imprint is to chronicle this lost generations of heroes: overlooked pioneers whose values and achievements will continue to serve as a source of inspiration and affirmation for future generations. The first of these tales is The Olympian, and the timing of the book’s release is no coincidence—the current cultural climate and atmosphere of hope and change has never been more appropriate for Williams’ inspirational message. The stars have finally aligned for the emergence of a new chapter in our human story, and Williams knows his opening when he sees it. A new type of figure in entertainment, Craig Williams is more than just an entrepreneur, author, publisher and historian. He is a visionary, concerned with nothing less than the formation of a new global mythology. And there will be more stories to come from Vintage World and its founder—as many as there are blank spaces in the history of our world.
